Wylie Storm Restoration and Roofing
Roofing is our primary trade. American Prime General Construction is a veteran-led general contractor that self-performs roofing and carries storm work through to full reconstruction when damage runs deeper than the shingles. We serve Wylie from Richardson.
On the afternoon of April 11, 2016, hail up to 5.25 inches fell inside the Wylie city limits. NOAA recorded that photogrammetry indicated the hail was at least 5 inches in diameter and possibly 6 (NOAA/NCEI event 633035), and a report of softball-size hail in southeast Wylie noted that the roofs of some homes and businesses were penetrated by the hail (event 628750). Five in-city reports that day carry a combined $215 million in recorded damage.
That event still defines roofing here. Nearly every 2000s-era Wylie roof was on the house when it happened, so many of the city’s roofs are post-2016 replacements now nine or ten years old, and every one has taken hail since. The useful question is rarely how old your roof is — it is which storm did it, and whether the damage was documented.

Wylie’s storm record, by date
Twenty-six severe-weather events recorded by the National Centers for Environmental Information plot inside Wylie’s limits between 2011 and 2026. The significant ones are below; wind figures are NOAA’s magnitudes, converted to mph.
| Date | Type | Magnitude | Damage | NOAA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March 23, 2016 | Hail | 1.75 in | $50M | event 625715 |
| April 11, 2016 | Hail | 5.25 in | $60M | event 633035 |
| April 11, 2016 | Hail | 4.25 in | $100M | event 628750 |
| April 11, 2016 | Hail | 3.50 in | $50M | event 629533 |
| April 11, 2016 | Wind | 64 mph | $6,000 | event 631253 |
| April 6, 2018 | Hail | 2.00 in | $10,000 | event 751860 |
| March 25, 2025 | Hail | 1.50 in | $5,000 | event 1242197 |
April 11, 2016 is the date to check your roof against. The in-city reports ran from 1.50 inches (event 628746) to 5.25 inches, with the 3.50-inch stone measured near Wylie East High School. Hail that size does not bruise a shingle mat, it fractures it, and the leaks surface years later. Three weeks earlier, golfball-size hail at the Wylie–Murphy border shattered windows citywide (NOAA/NCEI event 625715).
Wylie’s hazard is hail, not tornadoes. No tornado plots inside the city limits in the 2011–2026 NOAA record. The two EF2 tornadoes of the December 26, 2015 outbreak that Wylie is often associated with tracked from Lake Ray Hubbard to Rockwall (NOAA/NCEI event 606472) and Copeville to Farmersville (event 606480) — near Wylie, not inside it. We are specific because a claim built on the wrong storm gets denied. NOAA’s database also lags by months, so no recent entry does not mean nothing has happened lately.
Why Wylie roofs age the way they do
The median Wylie home was built in 2006 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024, table B25035), and 14,469 of the city’s 18,701 occupied units are owner-occupied (table B25003). By structure age, 7,878 units — 40.4% of the stock — went up in 2000–2009, another 5,513 in 2010–2019, and only 1,373 before 1980 (table B25034).
Most Wylie roofs are second roofs. Almost the whole 2000s cohort was standing on April 11, 2016, and many of those homes were re-roofed in 2016 or 2017 under a claim: young enough that a carrier will not blame age, old enough that 2018 and 2025 have had a turn at them. A Wylie roof inspection has to separate new damage from decade-old repairs, which takes photographs and measurements.
The 2010s cohort is still on original shingles — builder-grade coverings 7 to 16 years old, the ones most likely to hide mat fracture with no sign from the ground. The pre-2000 stock carries layered history: the 1,985 homes from the 1990s and 1,548 from the 1980s have been through several coverings, and aged flashing, vent boots and patched valleys are where they leak — which is why a targeted repair is sometimes the honest answer instead of full replacement.
Roofing permits and inspections in Wylie
A permit is required, with no published exemption. The City lists “Roofing replacement (residential and commercial)” among the projects requiring a permit, with no square-count carve-out for small jobs (City of Wylie, Projects Requiring Permits).
The roofing permit fee is not published, and we will not guess. Appendix A, Section III of the Code of Ordinances prices window replacement, foundation repair, HVAC change-outs and residential solar individually, but has no roofing line item at all (Wylie Code of Ordinances, Appendix A § III, last amended by Ordinance No. 2024-27 on September 10, 2024). The only line that could reach a re-roof is a catch-all minimum for residential miscellaneous permits, and it never names roofing. So we print no number: call Building Inspection at 972-516-6420 and ask what a re-roof permit costs today.
Your roofer must be registered before a permit can issue. Section 22-361 requires the building official to verify current contractor registration before issuing any building, mechanical, electrical or plumbing permit, and general contractors register in person or by notarized authorization (Code of Ordinances § 22-361), at $100 per class on a calendar-year cycle (Appendix A § III).
No roof-stage inspection is published. The City’s Residential Construction Packet sets out a 16-step inspection sequence for new residential construction that contains no roof, mid-roof, decking or nailing inspection, and no re-roof inspection card is published. Requests go through permits.wylietexas.gov by 7:00 a.m. for same-day scheduling (Residential Construction Packet 2024). No inspector stands on your decking checking nail patterns or flashing, so whether the deck was re-nailed and the valley metal and vent boots renewed rather than reused comes down to your crew and its photographs. We document those stages as a matter of course.
Code edition. Wylie enforces the 2021 I-Codes plus the 2020 National Electrical Code, with local and NCTCOG amendments (Codes and Amendments). The 2021 IRC governing your roof came in under Ordinance No. 2022-16 on February 8, 2022 (Wylie 2021 IRC Amendments, PDF). Building Inspection is at 300 Country Club Road, 972-516-6420 (Building Inspection). Read from City documents in September 2026; confirm current figures before relying on them.
Choosing a roof for a city that has seen 5-inch hail
Here, impact resistance is a real conversation rather than an upsell. The Texas Department of Insurance explains that roofing materials tested at a recognized laboratory are classified Class 1 through 4, that “a Class 4 roof covering would receive the highest premium credit,” and that the discount “is established by the insurance company on a company-by-company basis” (Texas Department of Insurance, impact-resistant roofing credits). No covering is hail-proof, though: a Class 4 shingle handles the 1 to 1.5 inch stones that dominate Wylie’s record far better than a three-tab, but nothing shrugs off a 4-inch stone. We can walk you through shingle options and financing. We are not a public insurance adjuster and we do not negotiate claims on your behalf.
Neighborhoods we cover in Wylie
We work the whole city, from the Woodbridge side along the Sachse line to the east-side subdivisions near Wylie East High School, where NOAA measured that 3.50-inch stone. Associations named in the City’s own HOA directory include Woodbridge, Bozman Farm Estates, Birmingham Farms, Sage Creek, Kreymer Estates, Wylie Lakes, Creekside Estates, Riverchase and Lewis Ranch (City of Wylie HOA Directory, PDF, indexed on the City’s HOA page).
In those communities the association, not the City, controls shingle color and profile, and several keep their design guidelines behind a resident portal. We get written approval before material is ordered, because a re-roof redone over a color violation is the most avoidable expense in this trade.
One Richardson-Based Contractor for the Whole Recovery
Large, complex rooflines mean more penetrations, valleys and flashing details — the places storm damage hides. Our inspections cover the full system, not just the field shingles.
We inspect and scope the construction damage, coordinate qualified mitigation and remediation professionals when specialized services are required, and manage the reconstruction through completion. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Wylie?
Yes. The City lists roofing replacement, residential and commercial, among the projects requiring a permit, and publishes no exemption for small jobs. Your contractor must also be registered with the City before a permit can issue.
How much does a roofing permit cost in Wylie?
Wylie does not publish a roofing permit fee. The adopted fee schedule in Appendix A, Section III prices windows, foundation repair, HVAC change-outs and solar, but has no roofing line item. Call Building Inspection at 972-516-6420 to confirm the current amount.
Does Wylie inspect the roof deck before shingles go on?
No roof, mid-roof, decking or nailing inspection is published. The City’s Residential Construction Packet sets out a 16-step sequence for new construction containing no roof inspection, and no re-roof inspection card exists. Your contractor’s documentation of decking, underlayment and flashing is the only record of that work.
Do you perform mitigation and remediation in Wylie?
Specialized mitigation and remediation work is performed by qualified service providers. APGC coordinates those services with the overall project and manages the repair and build-back portions of the work.
Do you provide fire and water reconstruction in Wylie?
Yes. APGC provides complete interior and exterior reconstruction after the required mitigation or remediation work has been completed.
Can you help document the construction scope?
Yes. We provide photographs, measurements, construction estimates, repair scopes, material specifications, and technical explanations related to the reconstruction work. We do not act as a public insurance adjuster.
What roofing materials hold up best in Wylie?
Wylie’s hazard is very large hail rather than steady wind, so impact resistance is the first question. The Texas Department of Insurance classifies tested materials Class 1 through 4, with Class 4 earning the highest premium credit, though each insurer sets its own discount. No shingle is hail-proof against a 4-inch stone, so we also look at valley metal, drip edge, vent boots and ventilation.
