Roofing is our primary trade. American Prime General Construction is a veteran-led general contractor and roofing contractor that self-performs roofing and carries storm jobs through to full reconstruction when the damage runs deeper. We work Murphy from our office at 2100 N Greenville Ave, Ste 106 in Richardson.

Murphy is a single-wave city. 3,834 of 6,030 housing units, 63.6 percent, were built between 2000 and 2009, and the median year built is 2005 (ACS 2020–2024, table B25034; table B25035). Murphy roofs age in cohort: whole streets reach the end of their original covering in the same two or three years.

Murphy’s roofing rules are also unusually prescriptive, and they shape your project more than the storm record does: no overlays, minimum Class C, 30-year composition, muted colors. We are not a public insurance adjuster and we do not negotiate claims on your behalf.

Roofing and Storm Restoration Services in Murphy

Murphy’s storm record, by date

Being straight about this is more useful than padding a list. Fourteen severe weather events plot inside Murphy city limits from 2011 through April 2026, and none is a tornado. Murphy sits between two heavily hit corridors — the April 2016 giant-hail swath through Wylie and the October 2019 Dallas, Garland and Rowlett tornado family — but neither produced an in-city Murphy record. Wind figures below are NOAA measurements in knots, converted to mph.

April 23, 2021 — the day that matters most

This is Murphy’s worst hail day on record inside the city. NOAA logged a public report of “golf ball to hen egg sized hail near the city of Murphy, TX” at 2.00 inches with $50,000 in damage (event 954658), plus a 1.75-inch report at $20,000 (event 954657) and a 1.00-inch report (event 954627). Two-inch hail bruises shingle mats without always breaking the surface, and the damage surfaces years later as granule loss and then leaks. Our hail damage restoration inspections look for bruising and mat fracture, not just visible punctures.

Wind is the more consistent hazard

NOAA has three in-city wind events at or above 60 kt: 72 mph on May 28, 2024 (event 1186839); 70 mph on September 18, 2011, where the narrative describes large trees down and several power poles snapped or leaning in the city (event 349599); and 69 mph on March 23, 2016 (event 625137). Wind at those speeds works the perimeter — rakes, eaves, ridge caps and any under-nailed shingle — and is nearly invisible from the ground.

A boundary note: the 1.75-inch report NOAA logged “at the Wylie/Murphy border” on March 23, 2016 plots inside Wylie, so it belongs to Wylie’s record.

Why Murphy roofs age the way they do

Of 6,030 total units: 3,834 built 2000–2009, 950 built 2010–2019, 613 in the 1990s, 231 in the 1970s, 184 in the 1980s and 121 since 2020 (ACS table B25034). Owner-occupancy is 93.7 percent, and median owner-occupied value is $555,500 (table B25003).

The original roofs are due now. A house finished in 2004 is on a covering around twenty-two years old. Murphy’s own material rule assumes 30-year composition, and a 30-year shingle in North Texas rarely delivers thirty after 2.00-inch hail and three 60-plus-knot wind events. Because whole phases went up within eighteen months of each other, replacement arrives in waves: if three houses near you are being reroofed, your roof is probably in the same condition.

Tear-off is mandatory, so scope the deck. Because Murphy bans installing over an old covering, every replacement exposes the decking — sheathing, ventilation and every penetration get looked at on every job. A bid without an explicit decking-replacement allowance is incomplete. See our roof replacement process.

Roofing permits and inspections in Murphy

Permit required, no threshold

“Re-roofing” is listed on the city’s When a Permit Is Required page, and the city publishes no square-count or percentage exemption for small roof work (City of Murphy, When a Permit Is Required). That page also directs homeowners to their HOA for deed-restriction requirements.

The four substantive rules

The city’s Reroofing Permit Requirements handout is the controlling document (City of Murphy, Reroofing Permit Requirements, PDF):

Fees, code and inspections

The residential roof replacement permit fee is $150.00, item (n)(15) under one- and two-family dwellings in Murphy Code of Ordinances § A9.002, which also sets a $50 stop-work fee and double the fee for work started without a permit. The current text derives from Ordinance 25-09-1394, adopted September 16, 2025; the section has been amended in each of the last two budget cycles, so confirm the amount before budgeting.

Murphy adopted the 2021 International Residential Code by Ordinance 23-12-1342 on December 5, 2023 (Murphy Code, Division 7: Residential Code), effective March 1, 2024 (City of Murphy, Building Codes).

The city publishes no roof-specific inspection sequence; no mid-roof, decking or nailing inspection appears in the handout or on the permits page. What it does publish is scheduling: inspections called in before 2:00 p.m. are scheduled for the next business day (Permits & Inspections), via an online request form. Ask what will be called on your permit.

Contractor registration

Contractors must be registered before a permit is issued (City of Murphy, Permits). Registration is valid 12 months from issue and the fee is $100 unless exempt by the State (Contractor Registration). Inspections are scheduled through the Customer Service Center at 972-468-4100; City Hall is at 206 N. Murphy Road.

Neighborhoods we cover in Murphy

Murphy is compact enough that we cover all of it. These subdivision names come from the city’s homeowners-association directory (City of Murphy, Homeowners Associations): Maxwell Creek North, The Gables at North Hill, Murphy Farms, The Timbers (Phases 1 through 5) and The Timbers No. 6, The Ranch, Hunters Landing (Phases 2 and 3), and Glen Ridge Estates. Most are 2000s-era developments, which is why roof age clusters by phase.

HOA approval before ordering material

For The Villages at Maxwell Creek, the largest association here, the published committee description confirms an Architectural Modification Committee reviews changes to individual homes and names roof repairs as an explicit example (Maxwell Creek, Committee Info). Its shingle color and material standards sit behind the resident portal, so pull your governing documents before approving a color. Between the city’s muted-color rule and an association palette, selection is narrower here than in neighboring cities. Our shingle selection guide is a starting point; the association’s list governs.

One Richardson-Based Contractor for the Whole Recovery

Murphy’s homes are large and mostly two-story, with steep pitches and high penetration counts. Our inspections cover the full system, not just the field shingles.

We inspect and scope the construction damage, coordinate qualified mitigation and remediation professionals when specialized services are required, and manage the reconstruction through completion. APGC does not perform mitigation, remediation, drying or abatement itself. See our storm restoration services, complete build-back and siding and window work, our financing options, or contact us.

We also serve nearby communities including Wylie, Plano, Sachse and Allen; the full list is on our service areas page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Murphy?

Yes. Re-roofing is listed on the City of Murphy’s When a Permit Is Required page, and the city publishes no square-count or percentage exemption for small roof work. The residential roof replacement fee is $150 under Murphy Code of Ordinances Section A9.002, item (n)(15), and work started without a permit is charged double. Contractors must be registered with the city before a permit is issued.

Can I install new shingles over my existing roof in Murphy?

No. Murphy’s Reroofing Permit Requirements state that new roof coverings shall not be installed without first removing existing roof coverings. Overlays are prohibited, so every replacement in Murphy is a full tear-off and the decking is exposed on every job.

What roofing materials does Murphy allow?

All roof coverings must be a minimum Class C. Permitted materials are composition shingles rated 30-year, standing seam metal, terra-cotta tile, concrete tile or slate, in muted colors. Only flat-pan standing seam metal with an approved factory finish is allowed; natural metal is not, and wood shingle, shake and industrial metal systems are prohibited.

Has a tornado ever hit Murphy?

No tornado plots inside Murphy city limits in NOAA’s records from 2011 through April 2026. Murphy sits between two heavily hit corridors, the April 2016 giant-hail swath through Wylie and the October 2019 Dallas-area tornado family, but neither produced an in-city Murphy record. Murphy’s documented hazards are hail up to 2.00 inches and wind up to 72 mph.

Do you perform mitigation and remediation in Murphy?

Specialized mitigation and remediation work is performed by qualified service providers. APGC coordinates those services with the overall project and manages the repair and build-back portions of the work.

Do you provide fire and water reconstruction in Murphy?

Yes. APGC provides complete interior and exterior reconstruction after the required mitigation or remediation work has been completed.

Can you help document the construction scope?

Yes. We provide photographs, measurements, construction estimates, repair scopes, material specifications, and technical explanations related to the reconstruction work. We do not act as a public insurance adjuster.

If your Murphy roof is still on its original 2000s covering, start with a documented roof inspection rather than a bid. We will tell you whether the honest answer is a repair or a full tear-off, with photographs and a written scope.
