When a storm opens up your roof, the clock starts. Here’s what needs to happen in the first hours, what can wait, and what a realistic repair timeline looks like across DFW after a hail event.
Emergency Roof Tarping: When Do You Actually Need It?
Tarp when water can get in — that’s the test. You need emergency tarping if you have visible holes or punctures (large hail can punch through decking), missing shingles or exposed underlayment, active leaks or new ceiling stains, or tree and debris impact damage. You don’t need tarping for typical hail bruising — bruised shingles still shed water; that damage needs documentation and repair, not plastic.
Why it matters: your policy requires you to mitigate further damage, and interior water damage from an unprotected opening complicates your claim. Tarping costs are generally reimbursable — keep the receipt. One warning: “free tarp” door-knockers sometimes use the tarp as leverage to trap you into a contract. APGC provides 24/7 emergency tarping across DFW at (469) 888-8326, properly installed and documented, with zero obligation to use us for the permanent repair.
Temporary vs. Permanent Repairs
Temporary repairs exist to stop water, not to fix the roof: tarps, emergency sealant, patches over punctures. They’re appropriate in exactly one situation — bridging the gap between storm and permanent repair while insurance, materials, and scheduling come together. They hold for weeks, not seasons. Permanent repairs restore the system itself: shingles installed to manufacturer spec, replaced flashing and vents, repaired decking, restored underlayment.
The danger zone is treating temporary work as permanent — a tarp up for six months, roof cement smeared over a crack “for now.” Slow leaks under failed temporary fixes cause rot and mold that dwarf the original damage, and carriers can deny that secondary damage as neglect. Our rule: temporary protection within hours when needed, permanent restoration on a defined schedule, and never a tarp doing a roof’s job.
How Long Does Hail Damage Repair Actually Take?
The work is faster than most expect. Minor repairs are typically done in a few hours to one day. A full replacement on a typical DFW home takes one to two days: tear-off and dry-in the first day, finish and cleanup the second. What takes longer is everything around the build: insurance approval (days to a few weeks), material selection and delivery, and scheduling — which stretches after major storms as the whole metroplex queues up.
Realistic start-to-finish on an insurance job: two to six weeks from inspection to final walkthrough in normal times. And if your roof is actively leaking, none of that wait applies to protection — emergency response comes first, then the process runs its course. Wondering what to do in the immediate aftermath?
