If you’ve never filed a roof claim before, the process can feel like a maze. It isn’t — it’s a sequence, and homeowners who know the sequence get better outcomes. Here’s the playbook we use with DFW families every storm season.
How to File a Roof Insurance Claim After a Hailstorm
Step 1: Get a professional inspection before you call your carrier — you want to know whether you have a claim worth filing. APGC does this free, with full photo documentation. Step 2: Review your policy (deductible, coverage type, any roof schedules). Step 3: File with your carrier and get a claim number and adjuster assignment. Step 4: Have your contractor present at the adjuster inspection — we meet the adjuster on your roof with our documentation so nothing gets missed. Step 5: Review the insurance scope; if it’s incomplete, we submit supplements with evidence. Step 6: The work gets built, then we send the final invoice to your carrier so your recoverable depreciation is released.
How Adjusters Determine Hail Damage
Adjusters inspect the “soft metals” first (vents, flashing, gutters, AC fins) to confirm hail size and direction, then chalk out 10×10-foot test squares on each slope and count qualifying strikes — many carriers use a threshold around 8+ strikes per square to justify replacing a slope or the roof. They’re separating functional damage from cosmetic marks and wear. APGC documents the same way, using the same standards, and we walk the roof with your adjuster so both sides are looking at the same evidence.
What Documentation Do You Need?
Strong claims are built on evidence: the storm date (save news reports or hail maps), wide photos of each slope and elevation, close-ups of strikes with something for scale, photos of collateral damage — gutters, screens, AC fins, fence tops — a professional inspection report, and a contractor’s estimate. Keep receipts for emergency tarping; those are typically reimbursable. This is precisely what our free inspection produces, organized and ready to submit.
What Not to Say to Your Adjuster
First, always be truthful — misrepresenting a claim is fraud. But there’s a difference between honesty and guessing against yourself. Don’t speculate about the cause of damage when you don’t know. Don’t estimate dates, hail sizes, or dollar amounts you’re unsure of — “my contractor documented it” is a complete answer. Don’t minimize damage you haven’t had professionally assessed, and don’t accept a verbal “no damage” as final; get findings in writing. The best protection isn’t a script — it’s documentation, presented professionally.
First Time Doing This? The Short Version
Emergencies first (active leaks get emergency tarping), document from the ground, free inspection, file if the evidence justifies it, let your contractor meet the adjuster, build in 1–2 days, final paperwork releases the rest of your funds. Your only costs: your deductible and any upgrades you choose. Avoid the two classic mistakes — signing with a door-knocker under pressure, and ignoring damage because the roof “isn’t leaking yet.”
